The first Spooner ancestor of which we have documented lineage wasWilliam Spooner, who came from Leyden, Holland early in 1637 with (itis presumed) his widowed Mother, Ann, and brother, Thomas. On theirarrival in this country they seperated, Ann and Thomas settled inSalem, and William settling first in the little Colchester settlementand later in New Plymouth. It is beleived that William was only 15when he came to America, and to pay for his passage, he was indenturedto John Holmes a well-to-do citizen of New Plymouth, in the colony ofMassachusetts. Within the year, John Holmes sold William's indentureto John Coombs, a printer and also well-to-do citizen of New Plymouth. The terms of this indenture stressed that John Coombs provide WilliamSpooner with "one comely suit of apparell for holy days, and one suitfor working days, twelve bushels of indian wheat and a good servicablemuskett, bandaliers and sword fitt for service". William Spooner musthave served his master well, for upon the death of John Coombs priorto 1645, William Spooner was entrusted with the administration of hismaster's estate and the custody of his children. Mrs. Coombs decidedto return to England shortly after the death of her husband and leftWilliam in charge of everything, including her children. So, at a veryearly age William was a family man and had the care and responsibilityof a lot of property. With John Coomb's help, William Spooner had beenable to buy a piece of property, and he bought more land in Plymouthand the vicinity in 1658 and 1662. On June 6, 1654 he was appointed"Surveyor of Highways". He served on the "Grand Enquest" in 1657 and1666. In 1660 he moved to a new settlement at Acusgnet in theDartmouth purchase. He along with 35 other colonists, founded the townof Dartmouth in June 1664 and he spent the remainder of his life nearthere. Because William Spooner served as surveyor and was a landholderin the colonies before 1700, his decendents are eligible to belong tothe organization, "Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century". andbecause he was one of the founders of Dartmouth, his decendents areeligible for the organization "Daughters of Founders and Patriots".William Spooner was married twice, first to Elizabeth Partridge, bywhom he had only one son, John. She died in 1648 and William marriedsecond Hannah Pratt, a daughter of Joshua Pratt, who was a "FirstComer", having come to America on the "Ann" in 1623, and was allottedland among the "Old Comers". Joshua Pratt was a freeman and aconstable in Plymouth, Where his widow, Bathsheba administered uponhis estate October 6, 1656. He too was one of the original 36purchasers of Dartmouth. William and Hannah Spooner had 8 children andwe are decendents of two of them, Samuel and Isaac. All through theSpooner family we find much intermarrying In fact, one Adam Spoonerwas called "Great-Uncle Grandad" by his grandchildren. William Spoonerdied in Acusnet, Mass. in March 1684, leaving a lengthy will.
